Barbie’s summer just keeps getting dreamier. In addition to the franchise’s hotly anticipated movie premiere on July 21, Mattel Television and LA’s Mission Control Media are co-producing a new limited series called Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge for Warner Bros. Discovery’s HGTV channel.
This four-episode format will see eight teams of HGTV home design and renovation experts (and one Food Network personality) face off against each other to transform a Southern California house into Barbie’s famous abode. Areas of the home will be remodeled featuring specific styles from various periods in the doll’s history.
WBD and Mattel are also orchestrating a cross-platform push for the franchise ahead of the feature film’s rollout. In addition to the HGTV limited series, Barbie will be highlighted in episodes of the Food Network’s Summer Baking Championship and Beachside Brawl, and a HGTV Magazine is planning to run a feature on the Dreamhouse renovation project.
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie is produced by LuckyChap Entertainment, Mattel Films and HeyDay Films. The movie is the franchise’s first live-action entertainment vehicle, and also the first project to come out of Mattel Films, which has recently started production on new Thomas & Friends and Hot Wheels pics.
