Canadian pubcaster CBC has signed a deal to acquire upcoming live-action series Spellbound (26 x 30 minutes), a co-pro from Cottonwood Media, France Télévisions, Hulu, ZDF and ZDF Studios.
Out of production and set to deliver in the coming months, the tween-skewing series is about a 15-year-old who moves from a small US town to Paris to study ballet. While juggling her dance training and new relationships, she gets swept up in a fantasy-driven adventure when she discovers a book of spells and summons an evil villain. ZDF, France Télévisions and Hulu co-commissioned the US$16.7-million series last year.
CBC will launch Spellbound later this year on both its CBC Gem streamer and French-language VOD platform ICI TOU.TV. Marie McCann, senior director of children’s content, said her team was attracted to the series’ blend of magic and dance. Also appealing is its similarity to Find Me in Paris (78 x 26 minutes), another dance-centric show from Cottonwood that has become a bona fide teen drama hit.
CBC is among a sizable group of broadcasters that have picked up all three seasons of Find Me in Paris, including Disney Channel (Italy, France and LatAm), Rai (Italy) Nickelodeon (UK), and ABC Australia.
Both series were created by showrunners Jill Girling and Lori Mather. Renaud Mathieu (Emily in Paris) is an executive producer on Spellbound, with Cottonwood’s David Michel, Zoé Carrera Allaix and Cécile Lauritano producing. And Federation Kids & Family and ZDF Studios are handling worldwide sales.
