Former Netflix and Nickelodeon animation exec Phil Rynda has joined The Pokémon Company International as director of original animation, with a remit that encompasses TV series, films and short-form content.
Rynda most recently served as the creative director of Netflix Animation Studio, but he has also done stints as VP of animation development at Nickelodeon, creative director at Cartoon Network and production designer on Gravity Falls at Walt Disney Animation Studios over the course of a career that spans 20-plus years. He announced his new gig on LinkedIn yesterday.
Rynda joins The Pokémon Company just as iconic animated series Pokémon wraps up after 25 seasons. The Japanese prodco launched a new show called Pokémon Horizons: The Series on TV Tokyo in April. And it has also inked a number of deals with Netflix for fresh animated content, including stop-motion series Pokémon Concierge—a co-pro with Japan’s Dwarf Studios that was announced in February. And the streamer has picked up a Pokémon 2D-animated special and CG-animated movie in the last few years.
Pokémon’s various animated series have aired in a total of 192 countries/regions to date, according to the company.
