Cartoon Network has acquired the worldwide broadcast rights to Dreamworks Animation’s new CG-animated TV series How To Train Your Dragon.

Premiering in 2012, the How To Train Your Dragon TV series will air weekly in both domestic and international regions that currently span more than 165 countries. The series, based on the Dreamworks’ feature film of the same name that has grossed roughly US$500 million worldwide, follows a young Viking who defies tradition when he befriends ferocious dragon, Toothless. The unlikely heroes then wind up fighting against all odds to save both of their worlds.

The television rights to the movie itself, meanwhile, have yet to be negotiated by any network, including Cartoon Network.
