As it gears up to deliver fantasy musical pic Spellbound to Netflix later this year, Skydance Animation has hired former Blue Sky Studios GM Bruce Anderson as head of production.
The LA-based studio didn’t have to look far to fill this newly created role, given that Anderson has been working as a producer on Spellbound since October 2022. But he will now oversee production planning for all Skydance animated projects, as well as the physical delivery of its feature film slate.
Chronicling a young girl’s quest to break a spell that has divided her kingdom, Spellbound will be the first Skydance movie to come out of its multiyear deal with Netflix, which also gained exclusive access to the studio’s full catalogue of feature films as part of the agreement.
Among Skydance’s other upcoming animated pics are Pookoo, a buddy comedy from director Nathan Greno (Tangled) that’s set to premiere on Netflix in 2025; Ray Gunn from director Brad Bird (The Incredibles); and an untitled film directed by Zootopia‘s Rich Moore that’s based on the classic fairytale of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Skydance’s first animated series, Wondla, is also in the pipeline for AppleTV+, which ordered two seasons of this adaptation of a book series by Tony DiTerlizzi in 2021.
Anderson worked at Blue Sky for a total of 16 years, moving up the ranks from production manager to VP and GM of the studio. His credits during this time include Oscar-nominated features Ferdinand and Rio, as well as Rio 2 and Horton Hears a Who.
Earlier in his career, he also worked on Brother Bear, Lilo and Stitch, The Emperor’s New Groove, Tarzan and Mulan at Walt Disney Feature Animation.
