Indie family entertainment prodco MarVista Entertainment has acquired the global distribution rights to a new two-part primetime miniseries event, The Witches of Oz, set to debut at next month’s MIPCOM.
The miniseries is helmed by writer/director Leigh Scott, executive produced by Christopher Campbell of Palace Imaginarium and produced by Eliza Swenson and Christopher Campbell.
The two-part fantasy adventure will put a modern spin on the classic tale and will star Christopher Lloyd as the Wizard of Oz as well as Sean Astin. The series follows a young Dorothy and her dog Toto, who are swept up in a tornado. Time passes and Dorothy, who has no recollection of what happened on that day, moves to New York City where she has become an author of children’s books based on the land of Oz. Dorothy quickly learns that her popular books are based on repressed childhood memories, and that the wonders of Oz and its inhabitants are real. When the Wicked Witch of the West shows up in the Big Apple, Dorothy must find the inner courage to stop her and her plans of global domination.
