LA’s WEBTOON Entertainment has closed a deal with Disney to add about 100 comic titles from the media giant to its webcomic platform.
Under the multiyear partnership, the two companies will partner on developing original titles as well as reformatting existing Disney comics and graphic novels for the WEBTOON app—which is designed for vertical scrolling on mobile phones.
Harnessing the growing popularity of webtoons among young readers, this collaboration is intended “to expand our beloved franchise universes on a best-in-class digital platform,” noted Daniel Fink, SVP and head of digital innovation at Disney Consumer Products.
The comics will roll out in a dedicated section on the app over the next few years, spanning several key brands of Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios. The WEBTOON model typically offers select free episodes of a webcomic at launch, while subsequent episodes can be accessed by purchasing and redeeming in-app currency.
The platform is already teasing the first batch of comic titles that will be available on the app this fall, starting with Amazing Spider-Man (2022-present) followed by Avengers (2012), Star Wars (2015), Alien (2021) and a Beauty and the Beast title called Disney As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale (2016).
The Disney deal builds more momentum for WEBTOON, which enjoyed 8.5% year-over-year growth in its Q2 results announced yesterday, generating a total revenue of US$348.3 million. The platform currently has a global base of around 155 million monthly active users.
The digital comics company has been taking advantage of its exploding popularity by reorganizing to better develop its most successful titles into series and feature films.
