School is now in session at Coven Academy, which has just gotten a series greenlight from Disney Branded TV.

The original concept by Tim Federle (Better Nate Than Ever) scored an initial pilot order five months ago, and will launch on Disney+ and Disney Channel in 2026. It’s a live-action dramedy about three teenaged witches-in-training guarding their city against ancient forces while also dealing with all of the usual adolescent hurdles.

Coven Academy is the latest project to come out of an overall deal that Federle has in place with Disney. Having demonstrated his youth TV skills by creating one of the Mouse House’s biggest live-action hits in recent years with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Federle will executive produce Coven Academy through his Chorus Boy Productions banner, along with Kimberly McCullough and Bronwyn North-Reist. He’s also executive producing Vampirina, an upcoming music-driven Disney Channel series about a vampire leaving Transylvania for a human boarding school—an aged-up tween take on the 2017 animated preschool show of the same name.

If a trio of youngsters coming of age at a magical school for witches and wizards sounds familiar, it’s an undeniably successful formula—after all, the Harry Potter saga will be told all over again in a TV adaptation that’s due out on HBO Max in 2027. And Disney’s bet on Coven Academy makes sense, given the studio’s reliable track record with supernatural live-actioners. Last month’s musical Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires generated a strong 9.3 million global views in its first 10 days on Disney+. And 2024’s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place became the most-watched Disney Channel series premiere on Disney+, sparking 3.2 million views in 12 days—and a second season drops next month.
