Toho Animation and Crunchyroll have unveiled a second Jujutsu Kaisen compilation film in the lead-up to the anime franchise’s third-season return next year.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution will premiere first in Japan on November 7 and then in North America on December 5 through distribution by GKIDS. The new film for teens covers the Shibuya Incident arc from the anime’s second season, which sees the sorcerers Yuji, Megumi, Gojo and Nobara team up to fight against a new alliance of cursed spirits and evil curse users.
The compilation film will also feature the first two episodes of season three, giving audiences an early look at the next arc before it begins rolling out on Crunchyroll in January. The latest season of Jujutsu Kaisen is animated by the returning studio MAPPA, with Shouta Goshozono coming back to direct the series after his work on season two in 2021.
Jujutsu Kaisen has had two previous outings at the box office. The first compilation film, Hidden Inventory/Premature Death – The Movie, brought in US$7.5 million in ticket sales from its limited global theatrical run earlier this year. Meanwhile, the 2021 feature film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 grossed US$166 million worldwide, with Japan only accounting for 20.7% (US$34 million) of the take.
Several anime properties have adapted existing seasons into new feature-length films, including Demon Slayer, Mobile Suit Gundam, Attack on Titan, Code Geass and Bocchi the Rock. Despite consisting mostly of recapped footage, the compilation films are often successful due to fans making their way to theatres to see a mix of remastered scenes, additional shots and exclusive content before anyone else. The trend has since expanded beyond the anime market, with kids franchises like Bluey finding success with the theatrical compilation format.
