Netflix is making room on its boat for a newly greenlit live-action teen series called Crew Girl (pictured).
Thunderbird Entertainment’s Great Pacific Media (Sidelined: The QB and Me) will produce this coming-of-age drama, and filming has kicked off this month in Victoria, British Columbia.
Set at an elite East Coast prep school, Crew Girl revolves around a 16-year-old female rower who brings order to a chaotic all-boys rowing team as their new coxswain—while navigating a complicated relationship with her mother. Expect to see plenty of teen drama hallmarks, like betrayed friendships, team rivalries and romantic entanglements.
The show stars Miku Martineau (Star Trek: Section 31), Jessica Paré (Mad Men), Samuel Braun (Time Cut), Kyle Clark (The Baby-Sitters Club) and Thomas Cadrot (Scream VI).
Vivian Lin penned the treatment and will serve as a showrunner and EP. Her past TV credits include middle-grade comedy Popularity Papers (YTV) and teen series Holly Hobbie (Family Channel).
Another notable name among the EPs is Jeff Norton, who has become a force in Netflix’s teen/YA catalogue. In addition to bringing kidlit adaptation Geek Girl to life at the streamer (with a second season on the way), he has also been busy this year showrunning a skating-focused series called Finding Her Edge.
Crew Girl will help fill a gap in Netflix’s releases as some of its most popular teen titles start winding down. Long-running faves like Stranger Things and Outer Banks are set to end with their upcoming fifth seasons, while Heartstopper is saying goodbye with an upcoming feature finale.
