Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) has brought several new kids titles to this week’s Asian Contents & Film Market in an effort to get more eyes on projects developing in its domestic animation industry.
The Busan market runs from September 20 to 23, alongside the Busan International Film Festival, and 3,000 attendees are expected this year.
TAICCA is a government agency that connects Taiwan’s media industry with the rest of the world. Some of the titles it has brought to the event include CG-animated series Dream Cats from Motion M VFX, about feline heroes who help kids in their dreams; Cheer Digiart’s CG-animated short film Galaxy Wonders, starring two kids who have to travel across space to find fragments of a dangerous weapon; and a CG-animated film called A Mighty Adventure (pictured).
A work-in-progress presentation of A Mighty Adventure (80 minutes) was previously shown in March at the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum, where it was the only kid-skewing film in the event’s animation showcase. It’s a US$2-million Taiwan/Hong Kong/Malaysia co-pro from Zero One Film and Flystudio that revolves around three animals who are transported to a city and have to find their way back to nature.
At a time when producers are struggling to find financing, TAICCA seems to be a well-funded org that’s eager to help its homegrown animation and kids media industry expand and develop. In 2023, Taiwan’s government earmarked US$311 million over four years to support the creative industries in its 1+4 T-Content Plan. And last year, TAICCA beefed up its Taiwan International Co-funding Program to cover 49% of project budgets (up from 30%).
In another sign of Taiwan’s growth, TAICCA signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea’s Studio Dragon at the Asian Contents & Film Market. Studio Dragon is known for its live-action YA romance series (My Dearest Nemesis, Our Beautiful Summer). It will co-develop at least two films or series focused on “youth romance stories” in the next two years with TAICCA, according to a release. The partners hope their collaboration will allow them to combine Taiwan and Korea’s strength to make it easier to reach international markets.
TAICCA’s full catalogue of projects on offer at the Asian Contents & Film Market can be found on its website.
