Fred Rogers Productions, Lea Pictures and WETA have teamed up for Many Ways to Show You Care, a multi-platform preschool campaign about children who help with caregiving for their relatives.

The campaign, which includes three live-action documentary shorts (pictured) of varying lengths, a music video and educational lesson plans, that will all start rolling out digitally on November 7 on PBS KIDS’ website and app, and the PBS KIDS for Parents YouTube channel.

In the documentary shorts, young real-life kids from Pittsburgh (where Fred Rogers Productions is based) are shown helping take care of their family members. In one short, an 11-year-old helps his father who has a traumatic brain injury, while in another, a six-year-old supports his grandma by helping with everyday tasks.

Animated characters from PBS KIDS and Fred Rogers Productions’ series, including Daniel Tiger, Donkey Hodie and Alma from Alma’s Way, will host the episodes and introduce the children and their families. Pittsburgh-based unscripted prodco Vinegar Hill filmed the stories.

The new IP is a kid-skewing companion to the two-hour general-audiences PBS documentary Caregiving, from Lea Pictures, which is Bradley Cooper’s production company. The doc, which premiered in June, focuses on the experiences and hardships faced by caregivers, while arguing that the US healthcare system has created a crisis in which more than five million US kids have to be caregivers.

FRP, in association with Lea Pictures and WETA Washington, produced the new for-kids take on the topic.

As part of this multiplatform launch, FRP also reimagined a version of the original Fred Rogers song “There Are Many Ways to Say I Love You” as a music video that now includes moments from the live-action shorts. The video also includes clips of FRP’s animated characters singing along—as well as Mister Rogers himself.

Related educational materials, including lesson plans and a curated collection of video clips about caring from FRP’s animated series, will launch on PBS LearningMedia.
