Canada’s Wind Sun Sky Entertainment has teamed up with game development studio Badimo to turn its popular Roblox game Jailbreak into an animated feature film, Jailbreak: Rising City.
Game makers Alex Balfanz and Keanu Jacobson created the multiplayer game Jailbreak in 2017. In it, teams of players portraying criminals and police compete against each other, with the criminals trying to pull off heists and the police aiming to catch them. The game has been visited more than 7.6 billion times, and typically has from five to 10 million players each month, according to Wind Sun Sky.
Jacobson and Balfanz will work closely with Wind Sun Sky’s team to develop and produce the family-friendly, four-quadrant film. The film is in development now.
Wind Sun Sky and Badimo also plan to develop a broader franchise based on the game, including an animated series and animated shorts.
The industry is starting to mine Roblox, with its array of games and roughly 100 million daily users, for adaptation. Last year, 9 Story Media Group and Baobab announced they were teaming up to develop a series based on the Roblox game Momoguro. And Wind Sun Sky is also developing an animated series based on the fantasy Roblox game Creatures of Sonaria (1.5 billion visits), in which magical creatures battle each other.
Jailbreak has everything it needs to be expanded into an exciting story, says Catherine Winder, CEO/founder of Wind Sun Sky Entertainment.
“Jailbreak is one of the most beloved worlds on Roblox, having captured the imagination of billions of fans,” says Winder. “And we couldn’t be more excited to build on its high-octane legacy with the game’s creators to expand it into a cinematic adventure that celebrates everything the players love about the game: the action, the humor and the pure fun of breaking the rules!”
