One kids movie was shining (like it was born to be) at the 83rd Golden Globes. 

Netflix megahit KPop Demon Hunters walked away with two trophies last night—winning Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song with its inescapable earworm “Golden”. But it lost in the Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement category (established three years ago to recognize films that resonate in pop culture) to another breakthrough musical feature, Sinners. 

The battle for the animated movie Academy Award has been heating up lately, with strong competition from Disney’s theatrical juggernaut Zootopia 2 and acclaimed indie films like Arco and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.

But now the odds are looking better than ever for KPop Demon Hunters. Considered an important bellwether for the Oscars, the Globes have a good track record for predicting the original song and animated film winners. (For instance, the last time the Globes winner for best animated film didn’t also win the corresponding Oscar was in 2019, when LAIKA’s stop-motion pic Missing Link lost to Pixar’s Toy Story 4.)

It helps that KPop has been building good momentum on the awards circuit, from its two Critics Choice wins to a whopping 10 Annie Award nominations. However, the streaming film was notably absent on last week’s BAFTA longlist, since it was deemed ineligible after failing to meet the minimum theatrical run requirement.
