Bananas in Pyjamas are coming down the stairs…and back onto screens.
ABC Australia has announced plans to bring back the ’90s preschool brand with a new live-action reboot produced by Windmill Production Company in the works. It’s the first project earmarked to get a piece of new funding that the Australian government set up late last year. The ABC will receive roughly US$32 million over the next three years to invest in Australian kids and drama content.
Before a certain blue heeler pup came on the scene, Bananas in Pyjamas was the biggest global kids TV hit to come out of the land down under. With its built-in Millennial nostalgia and a post-Bluey global market that’s showing a heightened demand for Aussie TV, the timing is ripe to revive this particular IP.
Starring B1 and B2, Bananas in Pyjamas debuted on ABC in 1992 and aired for nearly a decade as a live-action series. After that, the property pivoted to CG animation with Southern Star for three more seasons that wrapped up in 2013.
For its next act, the ABC is returning to the show’s live-action roots rather than continuing with the animated iteration. This new reboot will “celebrate the tactile and quirky suited characters that defined so many Australian childhoods,” an ABC spokesperson tells Kidscreen. And to ensure it’s a-peel-ing for today’s preschoolers, a few upgrades are planned, such as elevated storytelling and production values to help bring more of a “contemporary edge” to the reimagining.
It’s no surprise that Windmill is on the project. The Adelaide-based studio has a strong track record in puppet work that was most recently demonstrated in its acclaimed ABC Kids series Beep and Mort and a stage musical called Hiccup!.
While there’s no word yet on format, the reboot will return to a familiar setting—the adorable cul-de-sac Cuddles Avenue, where the pajama-wearing fruits live harmoniously with three teddy bears (Amy, Lulu and Morgan) and the cheeky Rat in a Hat.
