The prestigious Peabody Awards has announced its latest batch of nominees for its 86th edition, including the contenders for this year’s Children’s/Youth category.

The kids-leaning category only had two contenders. The first was the superhero toon Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Disney+), from Flying Bark Productions, Disney Television Animation and Disney Branded Television. Moon Girl follows a genius 13-year-old and her T-rex as they fight crime together in New York City. (Disney took home the children’s Peabody Award at last year’s ceremony for its live-action film Out Of My Mind.)

The Peabody Awards highlighted Moon Girl’s craft and diversity, noting how it “combines vibrant visuals and original music to tell relatable coming-of-age stories that emphasize themes of honesty, friendship and community empowerment, all while ensuring diverse representation through collaboration with organizations dedicated to authenticity.”

Also nominated in the Children’s/Youth category is Apple TV’s Shape Island, produced by Bix Pix Entertainment in association with Apple. This gentle preschool series with stop-motion animation is about a trio of anthropomorphic shapes (Circle, Square and Triangle) who learn lessons about friendship and overcoming their differences. 

“Through playful storytelling and humor, each episode addresses complex feelings and questions, encouraging both children and adults to connect, empathize and appreciate the significance of everyday moments, reinforcing the message that everyone’s story is valuable and deserving of attention,” the Peabody Awards noted.

Outside the kids race, a few older teen-skewing titles also earned nods in the Entertainment category, such as the Star Wars spinoff series Andor (Disney+) and the Judy Blume book adaptation Forever (Netflix), which follows two Black high schoolers navigating first love.

Last month, the Peabody Awards announced a special Institutional Award for PBS KIDS for its legacy of empowering kids and its determination to march on despite its loss of federal funding.

The Peabody winners will be announced on April 23 and they’ll be honored the following month at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills on May 31.
