POLL: Who had a fab week in the kids biz?

We were stoked when California announced last year that it was expanding its TV and film tax credit to cover animation. We were a little less excited when the first round only covered adult animation like “Stewie.” Finally, this week, an animated film for kids was selected! But it was for Phineas and Ferb, a property run by the Mouse House, which already has resources other studios don’t. So while we wait for some incentives to go to a producer that could really use a win, here are some other wins worth highlighting this week.

Banijay Kids & Family: There are few things more satisfying than an IP turning a defining quality into a unique partnership opportunity, but Banijay totally just did that with Totally Spies! The toon always had a serious passion for fashion—new outfits in every episode, stylish gadgets (suction-cup go-go boots, anyone?) and the near-constant presence of the mall. To honor its legacy, Banijay has linked up with a fashion school in France, allowing students to showcase original designs inspired by the show at Cannes this week—and that’s on top of a slew of other fashion-driven deals it’s made to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary. Now, will the path to a Gold Star be a catwalk, or a cakewalk?

Lenny Pearce: This club has a two-juice-box minimum. The creator of Toddler Techno and Baby Raves has already had success turning bangers like “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Row Row Row Your Boat” into EDM. Now he’s got a deal with Disney Jr. to remix tracks from shows like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and SuperKitties. He’s the latest in a growing list of YouTubers leveraging their online success to score major deals with big kids brands. If you’ve never seen a video of his dance parties, brace yourself—these ravers go hard…and then nap for about 90 minutes.

Paramount: If at first you don’t succeed, try try again. And if you still don’t succeed, and your dad has a gazillion dollars, keep on trying until the competition gives up and your target is ground into submission. You’ve got to hand it to David Ellison, he never relented in his quest to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery—a move that would form a kids IP behemoth. Now its shareholders have given his takeover the A-OK, and there’s just the little matter of convincing regulators, theater owners and all of Hollywood that he’s not about to wipe out too big a chunk of the business. Good thing he knows a guy who owns the social media, too!

Tubi: After deals for Looney Tunes, Sesame Street and Cartoon Network classics, Tubi is quietly becoming a power player in the kids space. Now it’s opening its first Canadian studio with a focus on tech innovation—a clear sign of growth for the AVOD. Its northward move also situates it closer to where it’s sourcing a lot of its exploding catalogue of YA projects. So what do you think, Gold Star voters? Tubi, or not Tubi?

So who had the best week in the bunch? Vote before 8 a.m. ET on Monday to let us know what you think:
