Tapping into the growing trend of merging physical toys with mobile devices, New Jersey-based game developer WizKids Games is set to launch HeroClix TabApp, a free interactive iPad game for a new set of Marvel HeroClix figurines.

On September 23, the free app and toys will be available on iTunes and at Toys ‘R’ Us respectively. The Marvel figures, which include Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, will come in packs of three priced at US$14.99 each. An X-Men pack featuring Wolverine, Cyclops and Iceman will be available on September 30.

By placing the figures on an iPad screen, digital gameplay, combat scenarios and virtual arenas can be unlocked. The figures also come with the IP’s signature HeroClix dials and collectible cards, allowing for tabletop action figure play.

Since launching in 2002, the HeroClix brand is the most successful collectible miniatures games on the market with more than 250 million miniature game figures sold worldwide.
