The US vidgame industry saw its ups and downs in 2009, as market researcher The NPD Group tallies year-end results that find the US industry generated around US$19.66 billion, an 8% decrease from 2008’s US$21.4 billion in revenues.
The numbers include State-side retail sales of portable and console hardware, software and accessories. Retail sales in total console, portable and PC game software realm saw an 11% dip from US$11.7 billion in 2008 to US$10.5 billion in 2009.
Portable hardware was the only area that experienced a bump (up 6% in revenue), while all other vidgame categories declined. Console hardware sales took the biggest hit and were down 13%. Meanwhile, console software and portable software sales were down 10% and video game accessories saw a 1% decrease.
But Entertainment Software Association CEO Michael Gallagher states that despite the decline, both 2009 and 2008 were the highest-grossing years in the vidgame industry’s history.
Nintendo managed to score seven of the top-10 console/portable software SKUs of 2009, but was unable to overthrow the billion-dollar worldwide sales of Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which came in at number one. Still, Nintendo Wii title Wii Sports Resort with Wii MotionPlus came in second, followed by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit with Balance Board, Wii Fit Plus, Mario Kart Wii with Wheel and Wii Play with Remote. Pokémon Platinum Version for the Nintendo DS rounds out the list in the 10th spot.
