Game consoles have become multi-platform devices and now Nintendo is bringing movies and TV into the fold as it teams up with US video rental service Netflix to stream content via the Wii.
Beginning this spring, US Netflix members who own Wiis can have thousands of movies and TV eps streamed from Netflix directly to their TVs via the device. There will be no additional cost to Netflix members, whose plans begin at US$8.99 a month, and also own a Wii and a broadband Internet connection.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says the company’s research shows 86% of all US Wii consoles are in the living room. More than three million Wiis were sold in the US this past December, and it’s the fastest-selling home console in history. Netflix boasts more than 11.1 million US subscribers as of September 30, 2009.
