As Penguin Children’s makes strides in the multi-platform content space, the publishing house is taking two children’s properties into the TV world through the help of production studios Kavaleer and Yowza.

Irish animation studio Kavaleer Productions twill co-develop the book series Hattie B the Magical Vet into a 52 x 11-minute television series for kids ages six to nine. The IP, developed in partnership with 3Mums Entertainment, follows an ordinary girl who discovers she is the guardian of a magical world. Penguin acquired the rights to the book series in June 2012 and will publish the first book, The Dragon’s Lost Flame, this June. Kavaleer is behind such toons as Garth & Bev, Abadas and the forthcoming preschool series Wildernuts.

Meanwhile, The Shark Wars children’s book series, published by Penguin Young Readers’ imprint Razorbill, has been optioned for a new animated series by Yowza Digital.

Written by E.J. Altbacker, a TV screenwriter whose credits include Ben 10 and Spider-Man, Shark Wars debuted in 2011 to a tween audience and chronicles the adventures of misfit sharks in the ocean. The sixth book in the series, Shark Wars: The Last Emprex, will be released in July.

The series has already inspired a six-level game app for iOS devices.  Shark Wars is the latest addition to Yowza’s proprietary series division, which continues grow with upcoming series in the works with broadcaster partners such as Kids CBC, BBC Kids Canada and Knowledge Kids.
