Dare to take a walk down the young adult fiction aisle at the local bookstore and you’ll be floored by the number of blood-thirsty vampires and assorted ghouls you’ll see staring out from the shelves. Leading the pack from its lofty end display is Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. The current ringleader of YA supernatural fiction has sold upwards of 53 million copies worldwide, inspired four feature films and spawned a plethora of literary knock-offs. And looking at the new crop of romantic supernatural thrillers cluttering the shelves, Hollywood studios (and possibly TV producers) won’t be running out of adaptable material in the next few years.

Following Twilight‘s footsteps onto the silver screen, Scholastic’s The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has been picked up by Lionsgate. Collins will adapt the screenplay from her novel, the first in a trilogy set in a dystopic world where 12 subjugated town districts force a teenage boy and girl to participate in the annual Hunger Games – a fight-to-the-death shown on live TV. And Seven Star Pictures also recently inked film rights to Carrie Ryan’s YA novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth from publisher Delacorte Books for Young Readers. The story is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a girl living in a wooded religious community who’s worried about a zombie invasion. So where’s the next Edward Cullen hiding?
