Online gaming continues to grow, according to the NPD’s latest Online Gaming 2009 report, which looks at online activity for video game consoles and portables, focusing on consumers’ behavior, time and money spent.
The NPD noted a 25% increase in the incidence of online gaming in 2009 over 2008. Even with the number and widespread use of the next-gen consoles’ game networks, PCs are still the most widely used platform for online game play, even though it saw a slight decline over the same time period. The Xbox 360 holds the top spot for console online gaming with a 50% share, while Nintendo Wii usage rose to 29% this year and the PS3 nudged up to third place from fifth.
There’s also been a spike in online gamers between the age of 13 and 17, which now make up 22% of the consumer market. More teens are selecting console systems as their outlet of choice for online gaming. Meanwhile, NPD also noted that the percentage of online gamers buying at least one console game and one portable system game has seen a slight increase since last year.
Also on the console front, Xbox 360 and PS3 owners are downloading more content than any other console owners, though actual downloading has slowed down, as the number of expansion packs are luring teens and heavy online gamers.
