Proving that video games are still holding up in the economic downturn, Edison, New Jersey-based mass market gameco Majesco Entertainment reported a 75.8% spike in net revenue in its first quarter of 2009.
Majesco’s net revenue shot up to US$32.8 million from US$18.7 million in the same period last year. Operating income was also up US$3.7 million, compared to last year’s US$2.4 million, and net income up 54% to US$4.2 million versus US$2.7 million in 2008.
Unlike many of the dour holiday sales seen by other companies, CEO Jesse Sutton stated that the gameco’s success came from its casual gaming strategy and strong demand for its family-friendly Cooking Mama titles and introduction of Jillian Michaels’ Fitness Ultimatum 2009. He also notes that the demand for family-friendly mass market games is on the rise, thanks to solid sales of Nintendo platforms.
