DreamWorks Animation-owned AwesomenessTV is streaming the entire second season of musical drama Side Effects exclusively on its first mobile app for iOS, which launched today.
With the debut of the free app the channel is offering viewers the option to binge-watch via mobile phone, as opposed to on a desktop, where the show will stream weekly after the first four episodes air on Thursday.
Co-produced by AwesomenessTV and Universal Cable Productions (UCP), the show is about a 16-year-old who is prescribed a medication that produces the side effect of “musical hallucinations.” It generated over two million views in its first week when it first debuted last October as a long-form special.
The second season of Side Effects will see the return of popular YouTubers Chester See and Lia Marie Johnson, and will also star Grace Helbig (ItsGrace) and GloZell (GloZell1). Featured music includes covers of Anna Kendrick and One Direction. UCP will also distribute the drama through various windows and platforms like digital download and VOD across international territories.
An Interactive Advertising Bureau US-based study released last week stated 46% of people surveyed viewed content on their phones and 41% watched content on tablets — almost doubling similar figures from a year ago. The upwards trend is affecting ad spend as well. According to eMarkter, global mobile ad spending increased 105% last year to total US$17.96 billion. This year, “mobile is on pace to rise another 75.1% to $31.45 billion, accounting for nearly one-quarter of total digital ad spending worldwide,” according to the forecast.
