The Brit division of HarperCollins Children’s Books has snapped up the rights to preschool picture book series Captain Bulk by author and illustrator Sam Lloyd.

Captain Bulk is the charming and humorous story of an eco-warrior hero who saves discarded unloved toys from doom, recycling them by giving them to children in need of a new plaything. The first title is slated for spring 2010 publication. The deal encompasses world rights, including merch, audio, film and TV, brokered by picture book publishing director Sue Buswell and Rosemary Canter at United Agents.

Mel Beer, head of licensing and content development, says that she’ll be seeking out film and TV partners as well as developing a program led by publishing and toys, with a focus on environmentally friendly products.
