Connected-toy company Sphero is launching its first branded cartoon series, with 25 episodes of Las Aventuras de Sfero y Jhonny-C set to air on Mexican entertainment network Telefantasía this fall.
To help create, produce and lead animation of the series, Sphero has tapped Disney vet Rob Maigret as COO. Assisting Maigret is Emmy Award-nominated composer Daniel Ingram (My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Littlest Pet Shop) and a team of local animators based in Jalisco, Mexico.
Set in the fictitious town of Toma west of the Universe, Las Aventuras de Sfero y Jhonny-C follows four friends who work for the most popular candy company around. However, an evil candy rival, The Triangles, emerges with plans to take over the universe and the candy market.
Sphero’s first entry into the cartoon space comes on the heels of the Boulder, Colorado-based company making the final selection group in Disney’s inaugural Accelerator program in 2014 for tech startups. Since taking part in the 15-week mentorship and investment program, which wrapped up with a demo day last October, Sphero has launched a new app-controlled robot named Ollie.
Additionally, Sphero’s Orbotix remote-controlled robotic ball was a 2013 TOTY finalist in the e-connected category.
