Gaming phenom Minecraft is expanding its franchise footprint with the upcoming game series Minecraft: Story Mode, currently being developed by digital entertainment publisher Telltale Games in collaboration with the IP’s creator Mojang.

The pair has revealed new details of the series, which was introduced last December as the blockbuster’s first narrative-driven game.

Minecraft: Story Mode is set to be a five-part episodic series, with the first installment published later this year by Telltale in partnership with Microsoft-owned Mojang.

Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will have familiar locations but new characters and a unique play experience. Users will play as protagonist Jesse, voiced by comedian/actor/writer Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, WordGirl), who stars along with voice talent Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Billy West and Paul Reubens.

The first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode will be made available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and compatible iOS and Android devices.

With its focus on creativity and open-ended play, Minecraft has become a huge franchise, topping the list of favorite games for UK children of all ages. Also in the kids space, HarperCollins Children’s Books has picked up English-language rights for The Elementia Chronicles trilogy, an unofficial Minecraft fan-generated adventure series based on the virtual realm.
