• NBC's Al Roker from Today has picked The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick as the first selection for Al's Book Club for Kids. Working with Scholastic Summer Reading Buzz! Campaign, Roker's first choice has so far sold more than 300,000 copies and Warner Bros. has purchased the movie rights.

• Youth cellphone company Kajeet has partnered with Whyville.net, the online virtual community, for a new pay-as-you-go service plan that will integrate cell phones with the website.

The Brainy Baby Company will have a new line of plush toys at specialty retail for this year's holiday season. Manufacturer Mary Meyer has landed the licensing rights for the toys based on educational concepts featured in Brainy Baby's multimedia programs.
