London-based toyco The Character Group’s sales rose 38% while operating profits increased almost 80% over a six-month period, ending February 28th, 2007. During that time, Character brought in US$112 million in revenues and pre-tax profit climbed to US$13.2 million from US$5.8 million in the previous year.
Toys based on BBC Worldwide’s new incarnation of Doctor Who bolstered the bottom line, particularly winner of the Toy Retailer’s Association Toy of the Year recipient, the Cyberman Helmet. Licensed Peppa Pig, Disney Princess and Scooby Doo products were also strong performers during this period.
Chiarman Richard King says he’s pleased with the company’s growth and expects to see further increases with new Spider-Man goods in the pipeline, particularly the upcoming Spidey/Robosapien hybrid, Spidersapien that not only recites key phrases from Spider-Man 3 but belches and farts as well.
