Kidscreen Summit kicks off this weekend in San Diego, and on Tuesday evening, after all the day’s panels, pitches and networking opportunities, we’ll be handing out the Kidscreen Awards—some of the highest honors you can get in the kids business. While we wait with bated breath to find out who wins those annual accolades, take a moment to vote for who gets a Gold Star for having the best week in the biz!
ABC Australia and Windmill Production Company: Sing it with us now: Bananas in Pyjamas are chasing…a Gold Star! The iconic Aussie series, which was for a time the biggest kids TV export out of the land down under, is coming back. The broadcaster is reviving the ’90s series in live action again, and it’s tasked the puppet maestros at Windmill (Bluey’s Big Play, Beep and Mort) with its production. Beyond being a delightfully frenetic and offbeat preschool series, the IP was once a licensing hit with deals around the world—and now Windmill will get the chance to show what it can do on a series that could travel down the stairs and around the world.
Disney: Where to start? The Mouse has been riding high this week, first with the stellar results of its Muppet Show revival special—nearly 8 million viewers in eight days and a 98% RT score. It’s so good, we’re even willing to overlook Kermit’s divisive new voice! Hopefully this means it turns into a series after all? Disney also found a creative way to age down the microdrama craze with a show that follows fan-fave characters from inside their hallway lockers—a perfect appetizer for vertical viewing before Disney+ starts integrating the format later this year. To top it off, they’ve managed to bring back Miley Cyrus for a Hannah Montana anniversary special. Give us a moment to grab our blonde wigs and microphones, please!
Hasbro and Animaj: Have the owners of Peppa Pig and Pocoyo found a way out of YouTube’s kids content monetization slump? Hasbro and Animaj revealed that they’ll be handling digital ad sales and brand partnerships for their IPs under a new joint-venture with a super cute name: Lumee. Armed with their YouTube prowess, high-performing family franchises and a method to sidestep kids privacy rules, there may be no better pair to build a bridge between kids brands and advertisers. This could be a big step toward fixing the undervaluation of kids’ content online in the era of COPPA—especially as Lumee plans to very (very!) selectively rep third-party brands going forward.
Sony Pictures Animation: The studio’s animated theatrical feature GOAT flew under our radars for a while, but this story about an underdog (sorry, a goat) who wants to play pro basketball against fearsome beasts has been a slam dunk with audiences. The film grossed an estimated US$50 million worldwide after its first weekend and its international rollout is just starting. It’s the latest surprise half-court shot from the studio, which delivered a massive sleeper hit with KPop Demon Hunters and changed the game with its Spider-Verse movies. With a Mitchells vs. The Machines sequel on the way and its secretive film Buds moving to the lucrative 2027 holidays, is Sony Pictures Animation becoming the GOAT of original animated kids movies?
Spin Master: Canada has racked up 14 medals at the Olympic Winter Games so far—it’s just too bad it can’t add the two golden Toy of the Year Awards that Spin Master won at the TOTY Awards last week. The Toronto-based toyco was awarded both the Action Figure of the Year and the overall Toy of the Year for its cute yet fearsome egg-busting Jurassic World Primal Hatch T-Rex, proving that licensed products are the showstealers in toy aisles today. But there was no time to slow down and celebrate, because Spin immediately followed up its win by showing off a surprise range of KPop Demon Hunters toys after quietly picking up the in-demand license.
So who had the best week in the bunch? Vote before 8 a.m. ET Monday to let us know what you think:
