Safety advocates won big this week, with verdicts in two landmark trials ruling against Meta (and Google, in one case) and how they failed to protect kids on their platforms. Some are calling this a turning point on social media safety that could usher in a new era of online responsibility. Is it a win for the kids industry? We’ll have to wait and see—social media helps a lot of producers get their properties in front of kids, but if TikTok is no longer an option, there are plenty of kidcos waiting to fill the gap.
Here are some more companies with a lot to celebrate this week:
BBC: Cheese and crackers! The British public broadcaster never goes too long without another reminder about how big Bluey is. In this case, a 10-day Bluey mall activation in Kent run by an experiences agency called Hot Pickle saw [checks notes] 2.2 million visitors! Even we find counting that high pretty trifficult. And as if that weren’t enough, the BAFTAs announced their TV awards nominations this week, and the Beeb led the pack with a whopping 73 total noms—and five for kids titles. But since there was no new Bluey last year, they’ll just have to win for one of their other awesome shows.
CBC: …and speaking of pubcasters up for national media awards, Canada’s CBC looked at the Beeb’s noms and said “Hold my beer”. Forget 73, the CBC was nominated 224 times in this year’s Canadian Screen Awards. (That’s actually down from 267 last year—there are a lot of categories!) CBC Kids got 31 alone—including seven for The Unstoppable Jenny Garcia from Apartment 11 and Avenida Productions. With a second season on the way (we got the scoop on that), will the show about a young hip-hop dancer with cancer be unstoppable at the awards? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
Disney: You get the best of both worlds / Striking branded stay deals, getting fans in their feels! Disney’s new Hannah Montana anniversary special is proving that this 20-year-old IP has still got the groove. The original live-action series jumped 1,000% in Disney+ views and its teeny bopper tunes exploded on streaming after the one-off launched on Tuesday—with the “Best of Both Worlds” theme song seeing a 607% spike on Spotify and “This Is the Life” up 747%. The revival is building some real-world buzz, too, with a new Airbnb pact that lets families live out their popstar fantasies in the show’s Malibu beach house. Miley Cyrus recently said she was “too tired” to think about a reboot, but with the enthusiasm we’re seeing this week? Don’t be surprised if she changes her tune.
The LEGO Group: At a critical time when social media companies are being smacked down and parents around the world are calling for more online protections for children, LEGO is putting its money where its bricks are and investing US$4.9 million to create new tools that game developers can use to improve kids’ safety online. Working with UNICEF, the partners have been researching the online gaming market for the past five years and will use this latest round of funding to launch the next phase of their master plan: actually meeting with the industry’s publishers to convince them to use those tools. For better or worse, this long-in-the-works scheme is hitting at just the right time: when the globe is galvanized to do something about it.
Rakia Media and Crystal City Entertainment: These two—an IP holding company and a prodco—have been quietly building up a respectable portfolio of nostalgic kids IPs (first Backyard Sports then Chia Pets) but their latest acquisition is downright prehistoric. Actually a newer IP, they just picked up the rights to turn the adorable Tiny T. Rex books into a series. Developing the project with Open Season and Surf’s Up exec Nate Hopper, this recent hit with the tyke set is sure to give a boost to their kids-biz aspirations. It’s a friendly industry—we’re sure these newcomers will be greeted with open, tiny T-rex arms.
