Is KPop Demon Hunters gearing up for an IRL tour?

Netflix is reportedly in talks to make multi-city concerts happen to ease the long wait for the sequel.

Hot off a performance at the Oscars, HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys may be hitting up an arena near you next year.

According to Bloomberg, Netflix is looking to set up a new franchise touchpoint for its hit kids film KPop Demon Hunters in the live events sector. The streamer reportedly plans to launch a tour next year with stops at dozens of major cities and is currently in negotiations with concert promoters, with “tens of millions of dollars in upfront guarantees” being offered.

As for what a real-life KPDH concert could look like, there’s more than one concept on the table. One option would actually involve Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, the vocalists for the film’s girl-group protagonists—though getting the trio together at every stop might be unlikely.

Netflix has also looked into the idea of using virtual avatars of the animated characters projected on stage. Staging virtual performers and holographic shows is not a new concept in K-pop, and it’s been a thing in the West, too, with acts like the virtual British band Gorillaz and the recent ABBA Voyage residency featuring virtual avatars of the Swedish group.

There’s clearly a lot of demand for a KPDH tour, especially as a family-friendly show. Recently, a K-pop tribute gig faced complaints from parents who bought tickets for their kids, hoping for something similar to the Netflix film, only to discover that the genre as a whole isn’t always appropriate for young children.

For Netflix, a live event could also be a way to keep the IP active for young audiences—especially given the lengthy wait for the sequel, which may take longer than the initially reported 2029 date, according to the bosses at Sony Pictures Animation.

The only things that could nix the plan is if the creative aspects can’t be finalized or if it ends up being too expensive to put together, the Bloomberg report claims. Kidscreen has reached out to Netflix for comment.
